David Velasco is a pre-service visual arts educator and practicing fine artist who loves working across the disciplines and helping students share their stories through art making. As a former freelance photographer and gallery member, he brings a wealth of knowledge from the commercial and fine art worlds to the classroom. His passion for teaching has stretched to K-12 visual arts classrooms, math instruction, and peer teaching college courses.

TEACHING AND INSTRUCTIONAL EXPERIENCE

May 2018 - Present
Lead Instructor, Mathnasium of Lake Forest, IL
Individualized math instruction in 4-to-1 group settings for K-8 students. Administrative duties including opening/closing tasks, assigning learning plan topics, managing student table placement, fielding parent phone calls, center tours for new families, new student enrollment.

Sept 2018 - Oct 2018
Intern, Cherokee Elementary School, Lake Forest, IL
40 hours of classroom experience in K-3 visual arts including observation, shadow teaching, and full instruction. Primary course topics taught included painting, ceramic handbuilding, and oil pastel drawing.

January 2018 - April 2018
Intern, Robert Abbott Middle School, Waukegan, IL
150+ hour fieldwork practicum experience in 7th and 8th grade visual arts including observation and full instruction. Primary course topics taught included drawing, painting, collage, and sculpture.

Instructional assistance for students in EDUC 220 - Philosophy of Education both during class sessions and outside of school. Facilitated multiple lessons including lectures and class discussions.
